The new trees, a combination of crab apples, magnolias, dogwoods and a redbud, were carefully selected for this spot and demonstrate the PFD’s ongoing “right tree, right location” approach, to choose species of trees appropriate for a given location. Criteria used to select trees includes determining their purpose or function, growth rate, lifespan, space and size at maturity, climate suitability, sun and water requirements, soil conditions, as well as pest and disease resistance.
On Friday, the Town’s three certified arborists who work for the PFD, will be on site on Webster Street from 9 am-noon and invite community members to stop by, ask questions, lend a hand with the new tree plantings if you’d like, and pick up a free sapling to plant in your own yard. It’s a great opportunity to learn more about selecting the right trees for your property and see firsthand the behind-the-scenes work that goes into keeping Needham beautified with healthy trees.
