Challenging Conversations....About Suicide
Surviving Suicide: A Father's Journey
In the fall of 2009, Needham Youth Services offered a program to the community entitled “Surviving Suicide: A Father’s Journey.” This program was facilitated by Youth Services Director Jon Mattleman and featured Rich Gatto (who lost his son, Greg, to suicide in 2004) and Rich Roberts (who lost his son, Jason, to suicide in 2009).

At this program, close to 200 parents gathered at the Community Room at the Needham Public Library to hear these dads discuss their journey, to ask questions about what each had experienced, and to share concerns they had about their own children and how to keep them safe.

Challenging Conversations
Out of the above-mentioned program we have now created a new initiative entitled “Challenging Conversations...About Preventing Suicide.” This program is designed for a limited number of parents (no more than 20 per group meeting). The program affords parents an opportunity to get their personal questions answered, and provides a forum in which parents can share their personal concerns about their children and how to keep them safe.

Topics Covered
Those who attend will discuss topics such as:
  • Depression
  • Parental expectations
  • Stress
  • Suicide prevention

Another topic includes specific strategies to employ with their children, family, and friends to keep them safe. Read the evaluations from the program held in March, 2010.
